Practicing with the Wizzard

Pressing the function keys will send you to different screens.

The Wizzard will always show you where you at, with a small blinking light called a cursor.

Groups/Cells

Most screens are divided up into groups. To advance a group at a time, press the arrow that points up or down. In each group there are numerous cells (items). To advance the cursor to the next cell (item), press the enter key.

Cell names include font cell;

When first turning on the Wizzard (with the power switch), You will have just the top portion of the Job Set-Up Screen showing. As soon as the enter key is pressed, the rest of the job set-up screen will appear.

After the Wizzard has been powered up, and you press the Shift-Reset key, you will have the full Job Set-Up screen, but the cursor will be under the first cell in the second group of information.

On the Wizzard and the Wizzard 2, the first item (we will call these cells)We are now in the cell for auto condensing. This cell will allow us to auto-condense equal height lines, all lines equal or auto condense each line individually. By pressing the space bar, toggle to auto-condense individually and press the enter key. (This is the cell that we can stretch or shrink our engraving for this line of engraving.)

You have up to 12 lines of engraving, while on the Wizzard XL, you have up to 70 lines) type in 2 and press the enter key.

If you are used to working with fractions, use the following chart to convert your fractions to the decimal equivalents.

This cell that we have now entered will condense (shrink) our engraving automatically or if engraving room on this line is available, we can stretch it out to 999%. Before adding text to this line, it will always be at 100% American Width.

On line #1, the engraving appears to be much larger than line #2. (by stretching out the characters, we increased the width, not the height. This is from stretching out line #1 to 175% compared to 100% on line #2). By quickly changing just a keystroke or two, we can drastically alter our engraving.

Press the Job Option key. The cursor will be under the Jig setting (A), press the enter key and the cursor will under normal. Press the space bar one time and this will change the cell to Reverse. Press the enter key to advance to upright engraving. By pressing your option key, which is the space bar, toggle thru until you reach upside down, (your options here are upright, right sideways, upside down and left sideways) and then press the Shift Compute keys to draw your graphics. What we have done is to change our engraving to reverse and to engrave this upside down. Before we make any more changes, press the Job Option key. Press the enter key to send the cursor down to the cell where you have it set up on reverse and change this back to normal by pressing the space bar. Now press the enter key which will advance the cursor to the next cell and change upside down back to upright.

By pressing the enter key again, you will advance the cursor to the cell that will allow you to work with millimeters or decimals. Press the enter key again and you can set the Z axis speed control (this is the up and down movement of the engraver spindle) from Fast to Medium or Slow. Leave the Z axis speed control on fast, and press the job set-up key.

To change to a different line, press the clear delete key and the Wizzard will clear out the cell one character for each time the clear-delete key is pressed. A faster way is to press the Shift Clear-Delete keys, which will clear out the entire cell with one command. Another way and sometimes even faster and easier, is to hold down the Shift key and press the Up or Down arrow. This will keep the cursor in the same cell and advance or reverse you to the line before or after the line you are now in. When you are on line one, press the enter key and the cursor should be under the total number of lines for this job. Leave it on two and press the enter key. On the justification, leave it on center and press the enter key. We are now under the font cell. Press the space bar one time and the Wizzard will change to TL Roman. Hold down the shift key and press the arrow that is pointing down. This will advance us to line #2 and keep us in the same cell. Again press the space bar and your type style will change to TL Roman for line #2. Press the enter key to advance to the next cell, which is the letter height. Press the enter key and the cursor will be under 100% Width. Press the enter key and send the cursor to the italic cell. Type in 55 and press the enter key. Now press the Shift Compute keys and draw out your new graphics. We have now changed the font on both lines to TL Roman and slanted the engraving on line #2. What we have done so far is to show you, not only how to set up a layout manually, but show you several options that are available to you after you have set up a layout.

To set up your spindle with all cutters level with your nose cone:

Unscrew your micrometer dial at least 3 revolutions and have the pointer on 0.

Tighten the knob on your pointer.

Loosen the set screw on the small brass knob that is on your cutter.

Hold spindle with the bottom of the nose cone resting square against a flat piece of metal.

Hold the spindle and push down on your cutter from the top until the tip of the cutter is level with the bottom of the nose cone.

Reach up and tighten the set screw that you loosened earlier.

Now set the rest of your cutters at the same position.

The big advantage of having your cutters set at the same position, is that it allows you to stop your engraving in the middle of a job so you can put in a smaller or larger cutter and have the depth of all the routing the same.

Engraving Odd Shape Items

The easiest way to engrave a odd shape item is to first set it up on tenth inch grid sheets available at any bookstore or art store. Square and Trace the outline of the item on the grid sheet and fill out all of your engraving information. Transfer that information to your Dahlgren Computer Engraver and then tape your engraving material down exactly the way you laid it out on the grid sheet to a Dahlgren Sub-Table. The Dahlgren Sub-Table is also in tenths of a inch.
