Engraving Basics - Rotary Top and Bottom Loading Spindle (Collet)

Rotary Top and Bottom Load (Collet Style)
This spindle (in most designs) will accept both a top load and “bottom” loaded cutter.  Effectively turns the engraving machine into a light milling machine. 

The spindle includes a draw bar and collet that holds the cutter close to the work surface, eliminating much of the vibration during engraving.  The interchangeable collet sizes allow the holding of tools such as end mills, router bits, short shanked engraving bits, drills, and specialty tools.  Since collets can be easily changed, different shank diameters can be used in a single spindle design.

Disadvantages

  • More expensive to purchase
  • Generally more expensive to repair
  • Requires 3 hands to set up

Zeroing the Cutter

  • Turn the micrometer ring until it points to zero
  • With Cutter installed in the spindle, loosen the set screw (a)
  • Gently place a piece of metal against the nose cone so as to push the cutter even with the bottom of the nose cone (b)
  • Tighten the set screw

Your cutter is now zeroed

To select a depth, turn the micrometer to indicate the depth you want to cut and the cutter will extend below the nosecone this amount.
