Diamond Gravers

The Diamond Tipped Tool
The diamond tipped, or drag engraving tool features a cone shaped natural industrial diamond, permanently bonded into a stainless steel shank. The tool draws a line in the engraved material as it is drawn along by cutting a groove. The hardness of the material and the angle of the tool allow for some slight changes in depth and line width. There are a variety of diamond tips for various uses, each

Shank Sizes
The stainless steel shanks come in 1/8", 11/64" and 1/4" sizes, and in varying lenths from 1/2" to 7".

Different Size of Tips for Different Applications

Did you know that there are different angles of diamond engraver tips? While there are more sizes than listed below, these are the most common sizes carried by the Engravers Network.

  • 90 Degree included angle diamond tip is for engraving on pens. It gives a finer line.
  • 120 Degree is a general all-purpose tip used for general engraving (trophies and plaques).
  • 130 Degree for softer materials
  • 140 Degree is for soft materials such as pewter and silver mugs. Wider tips prevent the tip from digging in.

How to judge when a diamond graver tip needs replacement
Like any cutting tool, how long it will last depends on a wide range of factors including use, material, operator knowledge, etc This is complicated by the gradual, normal wear of the tool which is too slow to notice

  • Changing tools by calendar - the best approach is to determine the types of work you do, and what materialsyou use.  Establish a schedule by following a few guidelines, and note the date on your calendar.
  • Low Volume Shops - for general purpose engraving you may not need to change tools for up to an entire year.  If use is occasional it may be possible to stretch that even longer.  Keep in mind that using a tool for years will lead to poor quality.
  • Moderate Volume Shops - Change semi-annually to quarterly depending on your work and materials.  It is recommended to set these dates by your seasonal demand.
  • High Volume Shops - You may need to change your tools as often as weekly.  Industrial applications with high volume and hard material like stainless or abrasive materials may need to change tools daily.

NOTES

A survey by “Engravers Journal” estimated an average period of 8 weeks for busy engravers and trophy shops. Remember your work can not be good if your tool is worn or of poor quality. The most elaborate and expensive engraving machine or the most talented engraver is only as good as the tool that is being used.
