Spindle Maintenance

Most spindles are designed with the highest precision bearings that are available, and the usual cause of failures in 90% of the causes is minute particles that work their way past the seals and into the balls and races of the bearings. So, cleanliness really can extend spindle life significantly.

Typical Spindle

To increase the life of a spindle, it is vital that the following steps need to be  taken:

  • The spindle should be cleaned daily, when rotary engraving.
  • Remove the micrometer ring and nosecone and clean out any particles that are in or around the bearing casing.
  • Use a soft bristle brush (toothbrush works good) to clean out the excessive plastic chips.
  • Avoid blowing out the chips with an air hose. It will force debris into the bearings.
  • Never, never oil your spindle! The oil will break down the seals on your bearings.    

Following these steps will give you thousands of hours of trouble-free use of your precision spindle. Customers whose majority of their business is routing with a high speed spindle use should purchase a backup spindle, as even the most precision made devices will wear out.User Tip
