Facility Requirements

Exhaust
To properly exhaust fumes and smoke from the laser engraving system during operation, it is necessary to provide an external exhaust that is vented to the outside, or the use of an internal fume extractor. While it is recommended that you have the external exhaust installed outside (either with a roof or outside mount) to reduce noise, it can be installed internally. It is never recommended to be installed in an attic or drop ceiling.

Generally, the exhaust should be located within 10 feet of the laser. [Additional specifications for measured distances.] If the outside vent or port is more than 10 feet, using additional exhaust hose from the exhaust unit to the outside is preferred.

ULS laser cartridges are designed with internal cooling and do not require the external exhaust to be constantly running, thus saving on utility costs. Below are the Exhaust Requirements for for each ULS model:

SAFETY

Class 1 Safety enclosure for CO2 laser beam. Class IIIa for red laser pointer.

UPS or Generator?

An uninterruptible power supply, also uninterruptible power source, UPS or battery/flywheel backup, is an electrical apparatus that can provide emergency power to computer equipment.

While a UPS is generally used on most office and home computers, the biggest issue would be supplying the additional power needed for both the laser and the exhaust blower.  A UPS unit would then need to supply a continuous 2.5 kW (using a 50 watt laser and a 1 hp exhaust as an example) for however long they want to run the equipment.  Because of this, it would be very expensive to get a UPS powerful enough to run both the computer, monitor, laser and blower; and that cost would need to be compared to the cost of lost materials and time if the power failed during a job.

Realistically, a UPS is a waste of money for keeping the total system up and running.  If they buy a 500 watt UPS and the machine is running during a power failure, they will lose enough power that the machine will probably dump the files, so again, it's not useful.  If power is such a problem, buy a 4000 watt generator and a power conditioner.  It would cost less than a UPS and that way they could run jobs in the dark.

If the material you are running does not justify the generator, a UPS is always recommend for use on the computer equipment. In a power failure, the laser and blower would stop, but depending on the size of yoru UPS, you could have an orderly shutdown.
